Manchester United linked with move for Porto midfielder Vitinha

Manchester United chose not to get involved in Yves Bissouma’s imminent move from Brighton to Tottenham. Instead the Red Devils may have other priorities.

The latest midfielder tipped to move to Old Trafford is Porto midfielder Vitinha, with the Portuguese press linking him with a switch.

Record report a Premier League club is set to pay his release clause, and cite United as the most interested party.

So what do you need to know about Vitinha, and what could be bring to Manchester United?

Vitinha: Factfile

1) Vitinha, 22, is a central midfielder who made 30 starts for Porto last season as they won the league. He scored two goals and provided three assists.

2) He has already played in the Premier League, spending part of the 2020/21 season on loan at Wolves. He started five games and featured 14 times as a substitute. Wolves chose not to take up an option to buy for £18 million, a decision they may now regret.

3) Vitinha was recently called into the Portugal international squad, and has three caps to his name.

4) His contract with Porto only runs until 2024. This contains a 40 million Euro release clause, Record report, current value of £34 million.

5) Vitinha is an all rounder. He ranks third in the Porto squad this season for tackles per game, and fourth for chances created, per WhoScored.

What they say…

Vitinha’s agent is former Chelsea and Barcelona midfielder Deco, who told A Bola earlier this season: “He is a remarkable footballer.

“(Vitinha) shows enormous maturity despite being very young. He reads the game like no one else. When he manages to combine all these qualities, he makes Porto unstoppable. Always setting the rhythm.”

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo reported earlier this season that Bayern Munich had entered the race to sign him. But their recent signing of Ryan Gravenberch could take them out of the running.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Santo admired his potential, commenting via Shropshire Live: “We are pleased with Vitor. He’s a young player – but full of talent and quality.”

Santo’s departure combined with Bruno Lage’s arrival as Wolves boss saw the club change direction and choose not to take up their option to sign him.

So what next for United?

United’s midfield priority is to sign Frenkie de Jong, and its unclear whether Vitinha is being considered as an alternative, or a complement to the Dutchman. United could do with more than one midfielder.

The most likely outcome here, if we were to guess, is Vitinha ends up signing a new contract with Porto over the coming weeks.

His excellent season for the Portuguese club has seen his value soar, and his release clause is quite cheap, with just two years remaining on his deal too, it make a lot of sense Porto would want to extend his contract.

If United make a move, then great, but we’ve been around the block with Red Devils links to Portuguese players, that we know not to take these links as gospel.

Vitinha is an interesting player who could certainly improve United’s midfield, but we’d recommend holding off on ordering a shirt with his name on the back, just yet.
