Manchester United considering Jonathan David as striker option

Erik ten Hag proved at Ajax he has a good eye for a player. One of his early reported transfer targets indicates this is likely to continue at Manchester United too.

CBS Sports report Ten Hag is considering Jonathan David as one of his first signings as he looks for a striker to add to United’s attack.

We named David last week on our shortlist of five alternatives to Darwin Nunez, who also remains under consideration.

The 22-year-old Canada international is set for a big year, representing his country in their first World Cup appearance since 1986.

Ten Hag considering Jonathan David

Erik ten Hag considering Jonathan David is a smart move. The young forward has scored 55 goals across the past three seasons.

23 of those goals came for Gent in 2019/20, which led to links to Manchester United at the time, with the Daily Mail reporting in 2020 that Red Devils scouts had been impressed by him.

The Sun reported how David was nicknamed ‘The Iceman’ due to his composure in front of goal, and his time at Lille has been a success, with 32 goals scored across the past two seasons, 13 last season and 19 this campaign.

This season has been a campaign of two halves. David had scored 16 goals before 2021 ended, and only three in 2022 – but he finished strong, with a brace in Lille’s final game.

One bad half of the season may be a bit of a red flag, but it should not detract from his overall body of work over the past three years, and it was of course balanced out by his outstanding start to the season.

David’s international record is also impressive, with 20 goals in 30 games for Canada, having made his debut for his country at just 18.

How Jonathan David would fit at Manchester United

CBS Sports reports David is keen on a move this summer. A move to the Premier League would be a good step for his career, and there is a spot for him at Manchester United.

The Red Devils need a striker to replace Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood. Even Anthony Martial is unlikely to play for the club again.

Cristiano Ronaldo can’t play every game, and United need a young forward, one who also does not have a huge profile that it becomes an issue if he is left out, to accommodate Ronaldo.

David is a young striker who can learn from Ronaldo, and fill in for him when needed, eventually taking on more and more responsibility. At 22 he has a big future, and he is the type of ‘modern striker‘ Ralf Rangnick has urged the club to sign.

This would be a very encouraging move, and one which would not break the bank, allowing funds to be spent in other areas.
