Denzel Dumfries to Manchester United: Inter full-back would be a real attacking upgrade on Diogo Dalot

Manchester United were linked with a move for another Dutchman this week. Yes, the media are staying creative with their transfer rumours.

This time it is Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries who is linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Assessing the Dumfries to Manchester United rumour

The rumours stemmed from Italian website Calciomercato, which claimed Inter would rather cash in on Dumfries than sell centre-back Alessandro Bastoni – also linked speculatively with United.

Inter are looking at ways to raise cash to finance a move to buy back Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. Selling Dumfries is one possible way to do it. The report suggesting United’s interest was picked up by The Mail among others.

The Mail also claim Bayern Munich are keen – but this won’t be happening after the German side signed Ajax’s Noussair Mazraoui.

FCInterNews claimed a fortnight ago that Manchester United had joined the race for Dumfries. It seems the speculation is picking up pace.

In terms of whether you should believe this, rumour, we would recommend to be sceptical, unless interest is corroborated by more reliable sources.

Dumfries could be real upgrade over Diogo Dalot

Manchester United’s right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka combined for a total of no goals and no assists during the 2021/22 season. It is hard for any player not to improve on that.

Dumfries scored five goals and provided five assists in his first season at Inter Milan, in which he started 29 games in all competitions.

Last summer Dumfries impressed at Euro 2020 with Netherlands, scoring two goals at the tournament. Inter bought him from PSV for a bargain £12.3 million.

While under contract to 2025, Inter would likely let him go for a reasonable fee, providing they make a profit on their investment.

Right-back is a position where Manchester United need to strengthen, but it is not the number one priority immediately in the transfer window. It could simply be a position which Jurrien Timber helps address, given his versatility, if he signs from Ajax.

The Dumfries situation is one to be aware of, but not one to buy into just yet, if at all.
