Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old marksman is set to undergo his medical with the Red Devils later today.

Turkish giants Besiktas, who signed Weghorst on a season-long loan from the Clarets, will receive a £2.5million compensation payment from the twenty-time league champions due to his spell in Istanbul ending prematurely.

United have until 12pm on Friday to register Weghorst in time to form part of the squad for the Manchester derby on Saturday.

With limited funds at his disposal during the January transfer window, Erik ten Hag has delved into the loan market to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo who mutually agreed to have his contract terminated in November, following a damming interview with Piers Morgan.

In 17 appearances for Besiktas this season, the 19-time Netherlands international scored eight goals and laid on four assists.

Weghorst, who scored twice for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands in the Oranje’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina, scored two goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Burnley following his move to Turf Moor from Wolfsburg last January.

But has Wout Weghorst ever scored against an Erik ten Hag team? United in Focus explores the towering striker’s record against the three-time Eredivisie winner.

Weghorst played against Ten Hag’s FC Utrecht side nine times during spells with Heracles Almelo and AZ Alkmaar.

The 6ft 6 striker scored once during those appearances and his solitary goal against Ten Hag came via a header during a 2016-17 Conference League play-off.

Alkmaar won the first leg of the play-off 3-0, but Ten Hag’s Utrecht came roaring back in the second leg and eventually won the tie on penalties.

Weghorst didn’t face Ten Hag’s Ajax side as he missed Alkmaar’s 3-0 defeat to the Amsterdam giants during the 2017-18 campaign before sealing a move to Wolfsburg in the summer of 2018.

From his nine games against Utrecht when Ten Hag was at the helm, Weghorst won four, lost three and drew twice.
