Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been linked with a possible transfer to Manchester United.

Add another name to the list of Manchester United goalkeeping options. Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Argentine journalist Gaston Edul of TyC Sports reports the goalkeeper is seeking a new challenge. He writes via Twitter: “Dibu Martínez is likely to change clubs in June.

“It does not have an exit clause. There are three Premier League clubs that have it in the pipeline: Tottenham -with more interest, Chelsea and Manchester United. Very likely to go a step further in the next market.”

Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United: Reaction

Emiliano Martinez is well known to Manchester United as an opponent, from his time at Aston Villa.

More recently he was on the losing side as United ended Villa’s winning run thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ decisive goal, but Martinez has enjoyed wins over the Red Devils too, including one at Old Trafford last season.

The goalkeeper was a key part of Argentina’s World Cup win, throughout the tournament and in the decisive penalty shootout.

Martinez’s reputation has grown as a result and both interest in him and his interest in moving is unsurprising. He would certainly be attracted by the possibility of playing Champions League football.

But as for securing a move, Martinez has made his own job a lot harder.

He signed a contract extension with Aston Villa in January 2022, which runs until June 2027.

Combine this with his World Cup success and Villa will demand a minimum £50 million – plus the usual Manchester United premium.

With this in mind I am quite confident we can discount Martinez as a credible option for Manchester United this summer.

United won’t spend a huge fee on a goalkeeper who is 30-years-old, and the budget is most likely to be directed towards a new striker.

Martinez would certainly be a lively addition, I just can’t see it happening.
