Manchester United only have one recognised defensive midfielder in the squad and this bargain Argentine could be the perfect addition.
Casemiro remains Manchester United’s lone defensive midfielder with Fred and Scott McTominay both also potentially leaving. Therefore, United could find themselves needing a new midfield option on a budget.
With the clubs current FFP concerns, we think there is one player who could solve all of United’s problems.
Alan Varela is a name which many knowledgeable fans have been eager to see move to Europe. Currently plying his trade in Argentina for Boca Juniors, Varela is long overdue a move, with much of the continent’s elite interested.
It is a move United should be looking at, a sensible move which is low risk but high reward. Here is why he needs to be on the list of John Murtough.
Varela is perfect for Ten Hag’s United
Varela is a 21-year-old midfielder with two caps for his country, the world champions Argentina. With a market value of just €10million (£8.5m) he is a bargain in today’s market and a player United can absolutely afford to sign.
He has made 19 appearances for Boca in the league this season, along with six in the Copa Libertadores. His impressive talent has led both Newcastle, Liverpool and Barcelona.

Spanish reports liked him so much they went as far as naming him ‘the new Busquets’. A term of high praise given the Spaniard’s legendary career.
The comparison is clear to see with FBRef showing Varela has a 90.9% pass completion rate, ranking in the 98th percentile. An incredibly safe passer of the ball, perfect for a side who aim to dominate possession.
Varela also possesses great defensive qualities, averaging three tackles per 90, in the 89th percentile. He is also a top interceptor averaging 1.35 per 90 (74th percentile).
With United’s reported interest in Sofyan Amrabat, a move would make sense with a second midfielder clearly on the agenda.
