Afonso Moreira’s journey so far
Afonso Moreira came through Sporting’s academy and was handed his debut by Ruben Amorim in August 2023, when he was only 18.
The former United boss then sent Moreira out on loan to gain experience, and in summer 2025 he was sold to Lyon for £1.5 million. Sporting have a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
Moreira has established himself as a first team regular for Lyon, where he has a contract running to 2030.
To date, Moreira has scored eight goals for Lyon and provided 11 assists.
United are one of several clubs interested in Moreira this summer, with Lyon even considering handing him an improved contract to reflect his impressive performances.

What has been said about Afonso Moreira
A Bola describe Moreira as “a modern winger, with acceleration in tight spaces and great ability in 1v1 situations.”
The newspaper also touts Moreira as a future Portugal international. He has so far represented his country at every level from under-17s to under-21s.
Lyon director Paulo Fonseca has admitted that the club have been surprised by his immediate impact.
He told Eurosport: “I wasn’t expecting this kind of performance so quickly. He has a lot of energy and intensity, and he works very hard. And when you compare his first few matches, his decision-making is completely different; he’s improved with each game.”
Moreira’s attributes have particularly shone on the counter attack, where he has been able to form an impressive partnership with Endrick in recent weeks.
Former boss Amorim predicted Moreira’s rise in 2022, prior to handing him his debut a year later: “We have very talented players in the academy, like Afonso Moreira,” he told Record.
Manchester United are expected to try and sign a winger in the transfer window, although central midfield is the top priority.
