Manchester United are being linked with a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma. While it seems unlikely, there is history there.
The goalkeeper position is one with more questions than answers at Manchester United right now.
Andre Onana is out with an injury and has been inconsistent, while back-up Altay Bayindir has also been unconvincing.
Various goalkeeper signings have been linked, and the latest name linked is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Why Manchester United are linked to Gianluigi Donnarumma
Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain this past season, playing a key role in their victory.
Donnarumma signed for PSG in 2021, blocking an exit route for David de Gea at the time, and he has gone on to win four league titles with the club.
The Italian has had his ups and downs at PSG in terms of form, initially struggling to build on his Euro 2020 success that led his nation to win the title, saving Jadon Sancho’s penalty in the process.
2024/25 was his best season yet for the club, yet this could be coming to an abrupt end, with his contract set to expire in 2026.
L’Equipe report PSG are fearful of losing Donnarumma on a free transfer and repeating their failure with Kylian Mbappe.
And with negotiations stalled over a new deal, PSG have proactively lined up Donnarumma’s replacement, targeting Lille’s Lucas Chevalier.
Now L’Equipe report Manchester United are keen in Donnarumma if PSG offload him, with the French champions preparing a £30 million move for Chevalier. Lille in turn have already lined up potential replacements.
Footmercato reports PSG boss Luis Enrique has already spoken to Chevalier to convince him to join the club.
Donnarumma, 26, has masses of experience with 74 international caps for Italy already, and would be a more than acceptable replacement for Andre Onana at Manchester United.
However, from United’s end, there have been no concrete offers for Donnarumma as yet.
Donnarumma earns £200,000 per week at PSG currently and United would have to offer a salary in line with that figure to tempt him away.
Manchester United interest in Donnarumma goes back many years
Manchester United have tracked Gianluigi Donnarumma for years, with interest dating back to his early career breakthrough at AC Milan.
Italian outlet Sportmediaset reported in 2016 that Manchester United were interested in a ‘sensational’ £30 million move for Donnarumma at the time.
Donnarumma was just 17 then and had just made his first-team breakthrough, and the move would have been a record-breaking one for a teenager at his age.
United stuck with David de Gea at the time, investing money into other positions instead under Jose Mourinho.
Now in 2025, with a new Portuguese coach in charge of the club, United are linked to Donnarumma again – but it remains to be seen if the giant goalkeeper will make his way to Old Trafford this time.
