‘Verbal agreement’… Fabrizio Romano says Man Utd star set for medical once formalities approved, exit imminent

Manchester United are looking to ship out an under-performing star after giving him opportunities to impress.

When he took over, Ruben Amorim has granted opportunities to every Manchester United player he has had available.

Some have taken them, and others have not. In the latter camp is Antony, who struggled under former boss Erik ten Hag too.

Antony has one goal and no assists this season, with his one strike coming from the penalty spot against Barnsley.

Now, Antony is heading towards the Manchester United exit door with a deal agreed in principle.

Antony set for exit

Spanish side Real Betis have been the front runners to sign Antony in recent days, beating out competition from Greek side Olympiakos, and from former side Ajax.

Now a deal is close to being finalised, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting Real Betis have agreed verbally with Antony, his representatives, and with Manchester United.

Romano says there will be no purchase option or obligation as part of deal, it will simply be a straight loan.

He reports Antony is set to fly to Spain to undergo a medical once the paperwork is signed off.

Romano writes: “Antony to Real Betis, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties with Man United too.

“Documents being checked; then time for travel and medical tests. United will let him leave on loan deal with 𝐧𝐨 buy clause. He’ll be formally back to United in June.”

Antony loan is opportunity to increase value

There is little market from teams to buy Antony during the January window. Any offer United would have to accept would be a humiliating one.

And Antony likely does not have the market of teams he is seeking, or ones able to match his Manchester United salary.

Strong performances for Antony could elevate his reputation, which has really hit rock bottom at Old Trafford.

Amorim has tried him at wing-back, and as an inside attacker, and neither have been any more effective than his stint as a winger under Ten Hag.

He played just the final six minutes against Brighton, having had the second 45 against Southampton, and missing an easy second half chance.
