Manchester United have been linked with Anwar El Ghazi but new claims suggest that the winger won’t be heading to Old Trafford.

United fans were left in a state of shock on Monday night as reports of interest in Anwar El Ghazi emerged.

The Daily Mail reported that United have been weighing up signing free agent El Ghazi to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options out wide.

Amad Diallo is injured, Antony is away from the club and Jadon Sancho’s future under Ten Hag remains unclear.

United may be a little short out wide and El Ghazi was suggested as a target on a free transfer.

Released by PSV Eindhoven before the transfer deadline, El Ghazi is free to move on outside of the window and United had been linked.

Anwar El Ghazi rumours played down

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell now claims that United aren’t interested in signing El Ghazi after all.

It’s suggested that El Ghazi was actually put towards United but a deal won’t be happening.

Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho are highlighted as options on the right flank, as are Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount.

That will be a huge relief to many United fans who were far from impressed with the El Ghazi rumours.

The 28-year-old didn’t exactly shine in the Premier League with Aston Villa and Everton, so the notion of him playing for United was a bizarre one.

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jack Grealish have been fans of El Ghazi

United fans may not have loved the El Ghazi rumours but he does have a number of fans in the game.

It’s only three years since Jack Grealish – who played alongside El Ghazi at Aston Villa – suggested that the Dutchman is a ‘scary’ finisher, branding his shooting ability ‘unbelievable’.

A former United legend has also been a big fan of El Ghazi in Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy was the man who brought El Ghazi to PSV just over a year ago, getting his career back on track with a nine-goal campaign in the Netherlands.

El Ghazi told The Athletic that Van Nistelrooy told him that he is a ‘great player’ before making the move to PSV, believing he could get more consistency out of the ex-Villa man.

That did happen last season but United have still decided that El Ghazi isn’t right for a move to Old Trafford.
