Manchester United are pursuing a move for Harry Kane, and there is a case to include Harry Maguire into the mix.

Manchester United’s plans for the transfer window are taking shape and there are two looming certainties on the horizon.

1) Manchester United need to sign a striker.

2) Manchester United will part ways with Harry Maguire.

A swap deal makes so much sense

Manchester United and Tottenham are two sides who can help to solve each other’s problems. A swap deal for Harry Kane and Harry Maguire, with some cash involved, can really work.

Maguire is surplus to requirements at United. The Guardian report he heads up plans for a summer clearout at Old Trafford.

Manchester United paid £80 million to sign Maguire. It is inevitable the club will take a loss on him. However, this is not a great look.

One way to blur the lines, and make his departure look more palatable, is include Maguire in a swap deal for Harry Kane.

The prospect of joining Tottenham may appeal to the centre-back. He would land a club who can offer Europa League football next season, rather than having to settle for a mid-table side.

Tottenham will be in rebuild mode under a new manager too, and defence is one of the areas they clearly need to improve. Maguire could relish a role like this.

Harry Kane meanwhile, needs to move on for his own sake. At Tottenham he is banging his head against a brick wall.

If he has any ambition he will move on, and solve Manchester United’s glaring hole up front for a striker.

The Telegraph report Manchester United are already looking at the feasibility of signing Kane. Throwing Maguire into the mix can help all parties, providing there is a will on Tottenham’s part, and an acceptance that letting him move on really is the right play.
