Ten Hag’s £25m lucky escape laid bare after shock Manchester United interest

Manchester United missed out on Timo Werner in Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window and may have had a lucky escape.

United left it late to splash the cash on two Brazilian stars late in the summer transfer window in 2022.

Casemiro and Antony arrived in big-money moves, representing two of Erik ten Hag’s biggest signings so far.

Those two signings have divided opinion, but United also seem to have had a lucky escape from that August flurry…

Manchester United tried to sign Timo Werner

Yes, somewhat remarkably, United made a move to try and sign Timo Werner from Chelsea.

The Manchester Evening News reported in August 2022 that United ‘made an 11th-hour attempt’ to sign Werner.

Chelsea were prepared to take a £20million loss on Werner just two years after paying £45million to sign him from RB Leipzig.

Leipzig ended up winning the race, beating United to a £25million deal as Werner made an emotional return to Germany.

Few United fans would have been too gutted to see Werner head elsewhere, especially after 10 goals in 56 Premier League games for Chelsea.

Werner was supposed to get back on track with Leipzig, but now appears to be on the chopping block once again…

RB Leipzig ready to move on from Werner

Werner managed nine goals in 27 Bundesliga games last season but has only started two league games so far this term.

The 27-year-old is slipping down the pecking order and now appears to be available for transfer.

RB Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder has suggested that Werner has been struggling for a while and the club would consider letting him go if he wants to leave.

Werner is now behind the likes of former United target Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda in the Leipzig pecking order and he may need to leave for first-team football.

Werner’s homecoming to Leipzig has gone completely wrong and United appear to have had a lucky escape with the German unable to recapture his former glories.

We can’t see United going back in for Werner, but with more attacking help needed up top, we can’t completely rule out Ten Hag having another look.
