Teammate plans talks with club president over signing Anthony Elanga

Sweden star Emil Forsberg says he is keen to welcome international teammate Anthony Elanga to RB Leipzig.

Last week, Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg reported via Twitter, that Bundesliga side RB Leipzig had registered an interest in Anthony Elanga.

Elanga was admired by United interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who is the former manager and director at RB Leipzig, so the connection is unsurprising.

It is likely Elanga leaves Manchester United, loan or permanently, having fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag. A report from The MEN claimed the club could sell for as little as £10 million.

Emil Forsberg on Anthony Elanga

Sweden and RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg is currently on international duty with the Manchester United forward, and he has a vested interest in his situation.

Speaking to Aftonbladet, he explained: “I know Anthony quite well, so it’s probably quite normal if it were to come up. I have spoken to Anthony.”

Forsberg went on to add that he plans to speak to RB Leipzig’s president about Elanga’s situation, believing he is a natural fit for the club’s strategy of signing young talented players, often ones discarded by bigger clubs.

He said: “I will sit down with the president Oliver (Mintzlaff) here soon and we will see what to do. Anthony would have been a good fit here with us. A young player who wants to get better. We’ll see. It could happen.

“He fits in well. We have many young talented players who will only get better with us. That’s the line we’ve chosen to go, so Anthony would have fit in well. Then if it happens, we’ll see.”

Elanga did not start a Premier League game in 2023 and failed to score for United during the past season.

He did net during the past international break for Sweden, and while that didn’t change his fortunes at Old Trafford, he will be glad to be back with his country.

Sweden face New Zealand in a friendly later this week, before a Euro 2024 qualifier against Ralf Rangnick‘s Austria.
