Manchester United are one of the sides pushing the hardest for SL Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, according to reports.
Rasmus Hojlund netted his first Premier League goal for Manchester United during the 3-2 win over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Old Trafford but teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo stood out the most.
United have had a multitude of midfield problems this season with the loan signing of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat failing to live up to the hype and expectations that came with the transfer of the Moroccan.
Casemiro has struggled this season and remains out injured. As a result, Mainoo has been the standout midfielder for the Red Devils this season but another player in that engine room would be vital.

Neves’ verdict
According to a report from Portuguese outlet Correio De Manha, Joao Neves has closed the door on a move to United or indeed anywhere else until the summer.
Neves only signed a new deal with SL Benfica back in August but his impressive performances in the engine room for the Portuguese giants have led to some of Europe’s biggest clubs being linked with the Portuguese international.
A move away from January has been ruled out due to the midfielder believing that he hasn’t reached his full potential yet, and but thinks he can only achieve this at the Portuguese side.
Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, has reportedly been told by the midfielder that he wants to remain at the Portuguese giants.
United are said to be the ‘most committed’ but will have to wait until next summer to sign the talented teenager.
Neves and Mainoo
It was perhaps frightening just how good Kobbie Mainoo was physically in the middle of the park against a strong Villa side, and Neves could be an exciting future partner for him.
Mainoo was intelligent in the air and was strong in the tackle, and he already looks like he can match the physical intensity of the Premier League.
If, in the summer, United managed to pull off the signing of Neves, who may cost around £100 million according to the report, the midfield room would be one of the best in the division, with long-term direction too.
Despite his small physical stature, his abilities on the ball are superb. Neves alongside Mainoo would be a superb pairing and one that Erik ten Hag would have to build his team around.
