Manchester United have let another player leave the club today with Mateo Mejia completing a move to Spanish club Sevilla.
United have really focused on outgoings this month.
Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek simply had to move on and they have both made moves to the Bundesliga.
Youngsters Joe Hugill and Maxi Oyedele have gone on EFL loan spells whilst Alvaro Fernandez and Hannibal Mejbri have gone on loan to Benfica and Sevilla respectively, with permanent options included in both deals.
The decks are being cleared at the moment and Hannibal now has a familiar face joining him at Sevilla with Mateo Mejia joining the La Liga club.
Mateo Mejia profiled amid Manchester United exit
Mejia hails from Zaragoza and started his career in the Real Zaragoza ranks as a kid.
United spotted Mejia’s talent and lured him to Old Trafford back in 2019, aged just 16.
Mejia has never made a first-team appearance for United but the winger has made an impact in Premier League 2 this season.
Three goals and five assists in nine Premier League 2 appearances means Mejia has caught the eye – and Sevilla are now taking him back to Spain.
Mejia can play for both Spain and Colombia at international level and has so far picked the latter, making two appearances for their Under-20’s.
Mejia praised as Sevilla strike deal
Sevilla have confirmed that Mejia will be joining their B team, Sevilla Atletico.
The hype is already building though as former Zaragoza youth coach Raul Martinez has told Estadio Deportivo that he thinks Mejia is an ‘animal’ physically.
Martinez has raved about Mejia’s speed, suggesting that he is ‘very fast’ and was at the level of Spanish athletes during his Zaragoza days.
Martinez also feels that Mejia can make a real impact at Sevilla, believing that the La Liga side simply don’t have talents like Mejia in their ranks right now.
“Physically he is an animal. When I had him he was at speeds typical of a Spanish Athletics Championship. He is very fast, breaks defenses and is very hungry to achieve things , which is essential for any promising young football player,” said Martinez. “Sevilla is in a difficult situation and I think he can revolutionise them with his speed and imbalance. Seeing the profile of players that Sevilla has, they will bring different things to the team.”
“He could be a pretty good addition for Sevilla. It is true that he has had problems with injuries, but he was having a good year at Manchester United and will adapt easily. At Sevilla there are no players with his profile and he can make the difference,” he added.
Only time will tell whether United have really lost a gem in Mejia.
Now 20, Mejia has yet to even come close to a United first-team appearance and his exit indicates that Erik ten Hag doesn’t see that changing any time soon.
Mejia needs to impress for Sevilla Atletico first, but Sevilla will feel that he is a talent who can eventually make a first-team impact in Andalusia.
