Manchester United confirmed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon today in a press release with just hours of the window remaining.
United were in desperate need of defensive cover and decided after days of deliberation and being reportedly close to signing Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, that Reguilon was the man they needed as depth following the injury to Luke Shaw.
Cucurella was seemingly too expensive so United pivoted their plans and targeted the former Real Madrid left-back, who could have joined the club in 2020 but opted to join Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.
Erik Ten Hag will be delighted to get some depth and the Dutchman confirmed in his lunchtime pre-match press conference that the Spaniard had been registered in time and is available for selection for the game against Arsenal this Sunday.

Reguilon’s reaction
In an official press release made by United, it is clear that the defender simply could not refuse this opportunity to join one of Britain’s biggest clubs.
Reguilon said: “In life, you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.
“Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.”

Could Reguilon stay for the season
The statement released by United does indicate it is a season-long loan but The Athletic have stated that the deal contains a break clause in the contract in January.
It seems likely that the Spaniard, as long as he isn’t atrocious for United, could well be kept for the season. There is also no buy option in the deal for the defender.
The defender, who couldn’t have imagined this move happening a week ago, seems excited about the prospect of playing at Old Trafford this season.
“I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities.”
