‘Big and beautiful club’: Ryan Gravenberch linked with Manchester United again

Manchester United are being linked again to Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

This one does not come as a surprise. Have you heard the tale about a player who thrived at Ajax, winning titles, went onto join another big European club, and spent most of the season sitting on the bench?

We could be describing Donny van de Beek. In this case, we are referring to Ryan Gravenberch.

A report from 90Min claims Manchester United are interested amid reports Gravenberch is looking to leave Bayern after just one season.

Gravenberch turned United down last summer

Gravenberch’s spell at Bayern is scarily similar to Van de Beek’s stint at Manchester United.

He has played 17 Bundesliga games – but only one has come as a starter. Even with Marcel Sabitzer removed from the queue, Gravenberch’s fortunes have not improved.

Gravenberch thrived under Erik ten Hag at Ajax. But then again, so did Donny van de Beek. So there is no guarantee he would suddenly transform at Old Trafford.

Nonetheless this is one to watch. It all adds up. Perhaps Bayern would even be interested in a swap deal.

Gravenberch admitted turning Manchester United down a year ago. He said despite admiring the Red Devils, he had already given his word to Bayern Munich.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, also reported by Ajax Showtime, Gravenberch said: “Manchester United is a very big and beautiful club. But I already had such a good feeling at Bayern and I had given my word.”

I would suspect United have bigger priorities in midfield than a Gravenberch reclamation project this summer, however, Ten Hag may see this as a buy low opportunity on a player he knows works in his system.

This one can’t be ruled out if it gets to mid-summer and he is still available.
