Rio Ferdinand shares his ‘realistic’ transfer plans for Man Utd, including Elliot Anderson verdict

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United not to ignore two other positions as they prioritise a midfield revamp in the summer transfer window.

As the summer transfer window edges closer, Manchester United will be settling on their plans to strengthen the team ahead of the 2026/27 season.

United must also decide whether Michael Carrick will remain as head coach. The 44-year-old has done a brilliant job to date as interim head coach.

By securing qualification for the Champions League, Carrick will only strengthen his case for a permanent role at the end of the campaign. That would also give the Red Devils a much-needed boost in the transfer market in terms of funds.

Rio Ferdinand wants four signings at Man Utd this summer

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has had his say on what players he thinks his former club should sign this summer.

With United always being the biggest story in English football, there will be plenty of speculation this summer over the head coach role and what players are going to take priority as they attempt to continue rebuilding the squad for future success.

The Red Devils currently sit third in the Premier League table with seven games remaining.

Ferdinand has his eyes set on the summer already. He wants United to sign two midfielders, with Casemiro leaving and Manuel Ugarte’s future uncertain.

On the latest episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, he said: “If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that’s a realistic transfer window.

“If I was the club, my priorities would be two central midfielders, one who starts and maybe a younger one who you can blood in there around Bruno [Fernandes], Kobbie [Mainoo] and the one you bring in.

“I would also go for another forward, a younger one who is going to be more of a back-up to what we’ve already got. And I would go for a full-back.

“That’s it. I know you can say you want 10 new players and most positions can be improved but I don’t think you need a huge revamp, it’s still a lot but that’s realistic.”

Rio Ferdinand believes Man Utd should focus on Elliot Anderson

Finding a replacement for Casemiro will be at the top of United’s agenda when it comes to new signings.

Ferdinand has given his verdict on Nottingham Forest ace Elliot Anderson, who has been strongly linked with United.

The former England defender stressed that Anderson ticks all the right boxes after seeing Carlos Baleba’s form dip at Brighton.

He continued: “Beginning of the season everyone was talking about [Carlos] Baleba, he seems to have gone off the boil a little bit form wise.

“Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player. I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I think he’d be a good addition to the squad.

“But I just think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team.

“Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes. But I think there are a few other young guns out there – I won’t mention their names yet because I don’t want anyone else to get on that scent.”
