AC Milan are now trying to sign former Manchester United target Marko Arnautovic to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

We’re all too used to seeing bizarre transfer rumours when it comes to Manchester United.

It feels like five rumours sprout up every day with varying degrees of truth.

One rumour that left fans scratching their heads last summer surrounded Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic.

The veteran hitman was linked with a bizarre move to Old Trafford back in August – and the rumours were seemingly true.

United did have an interest in luring former West Ham United attacker Arnautovic back to the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag and assistant boss Steve McClaren worked with Arnautovic at FC Twente way back in the mid-2000’s and wanted a reunion.

Sky Sports reported that United had a bid of around £7.6million turned down before pulling out of the race amid concerns from fans and former players.

United didn’t get a striker in before the summer deadline and waited until January to land Wout Weghorst on loan.

Whether United would have been any better off with Arnautovic is up for debate, but he could now land a big move anyway.

Marko Arnautovic lined up to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic at AC Milan

Fabrizio Romano now reports that AC Milan are in talks with the agents of Arnautovic with a view to a summer deal.

More talks are expected in the coming days with Milan hoping to land the experienced striker.

The plan is for Arnautovic to come in as a replacement for ex-Manchester United hitman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The legendary Swede is leaving Milan at the end of his contract this summer as he edges towards his 42nd birthday.

Arnautovic – who scored nine goals in 20 Serie A games this season – could now make a stunning return to the San Siro having previously played for Inter Milan.

Many have compared Arnautovic to Ibrahimovic over the years and there are certainly some parallels.

Both have parents from the former Yugoslavia, both emerged in the Eredivisie and both have been known as somewhat mercurial strikers over the years.

Milan now think the 34-year-old can replace Ibrahimovic, with Arnautovic out of contract and able to move for free this summer.

We can’t see United rekindling any interest in Arnautovic but many fans will now want to see how he can replace such an icon in Ibrahimovic.
