Newcastle eye Man Utd target as Benjamin Sesko alternative, after rejecting £120m Alexander Isak bid

Manchester United are not the only Premier League club in the market for a new striker.

Ruben Amorim is looking to add goals to his Manchester United team ahead of the 2025/26 season.

United scored just 44 goals in the Premier League this season, but the Red Devils have thus far added two players to the squad who know how to score goals in the top flight.

Earlier this summer, Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves and was followed by Bryan Mbeumo a month later as the Cameroon international signed from Brentford.

Now, the focus for United is on a striker, but they will face competition for any of the strikers they choose to prioritise.

Rasmus Hojlund led the attacking line last season, scoring 10 goals across all competitions, which isn’t enough for a main centre forward.

Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, despite the Swede being heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. That was after Chelsea signed United’s initial striker target Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.

Newcastle eye Ollie Watkins as Benjamin Sesko alternative

Although Newcastle fans are excited by the arrival of former United academy graduate Anthony Elanga, the Magpies have missed out on several targets this summer.

Newcastle targeted both Cunha and Mbeumo before the pair decided to join United instead.

Reports suggest United are making moves for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and could potentially beat Newcastle in the race for the striker’s sought-after signature.

Newcastle are stepping up their search for a striker because it is likely that Alexander Isak will leave the club this summer, amid interest from Liverpool.

However, Liverpool’s initial bid for Isak was rejected. It is believed to be a £120m package plus add-ons.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are likely to make a move for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins if they are encouraged, while talks remain ongoing over a deal for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

Watkins was previously linked with a move to United, but it is now understood that United are pushing ahead for a deal to sign Sesko.

That could mean Newcastle have to settle for Watkins instead of the Slovenia international they hold a strong interest in.

The report outlines that Sesko was Newcastle’s top target but United have now made a move for the young striker.

Man Utd hold the key to striker merry-go-round

Newcastle are standing firm on Isak, stressing their most prized asset is not for sale this summer.

But that has not stopped them eyeing Sesko and Watkins as potential replacements for the Swede.

If United strike a deal with RB Leipzig for Sesko, it could launch a transfer merry-go-round among strikers that could see Isak eventually end up at Anfield.

Liverpool need to make an offer that Newcastle will accept first.
