Manchester United target Lucas Bergvall could be allowed to leave in January, according to Djurgårdens IF sporting director.

Midfielder Lucas Bergvall has been linked with a move to Manchester United and the 17-year-old could be an exciting addition to the engine room at Old Trafford.

With academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo excelling in midfield for the Red Devils, which includes a mature performance at Anfield, Bergvall can see that if you’re good enough you’re old enough and the Swedish teenager could be given chances to impress if he chooses to make the move to Old Trafford.

However, it is not just United who are keen on the midfielder, it is several clubs from all around Europe who could be ready to make their move.

Director on Bergvall future

His current club Djurgårdens IF seems resigned to the fact that the 17-year-old will be moving, either in January or the summer and the club’s director Bo Andersson has been speaking about the midfielder’s future.

“I do not want to say too much right now out of respect for the clubs involved,” Andersson told Fotboll Direkt. “No, I do not deny it, but at the moment it is best to wait and see considering how quickly everything is developing right now.”

When asked if a move can happen in January, Andersson replied: “No, it is no longer that. It’s clear that it can happen considering which clubs you see it is about but also what sums can be relevant.

“There are a lot of clubs at a level that we have never had any contact with before Lucas Bergvall.”

As well as this, Andersson confirmed that the clubs in contact for the Swedish midfielder are from the European ‘elite’, whether United, at this moment in time, falls in that category remains to be seen but it does seem a move is in the offing.

United face competition

Lucas Bergvall was pictured on trial with Manchester United in February 2021. He was lauded at the time by Fotboll Direkt to be “ranked by many as Sweden’s most exciting young player.”

Due to the midfielder not being 18 yet, United were unable to sign him, but have continued to pay close attention to his progress.

A report from the Daily Mail back in April reported that United had sent scouts to watch the midfielder who had a trial at the Red Devils back in 2021.

He turns 18 on February 6, after the transfer window, which means United can’t do a deal to bring him in next month – however, an agreement could be struck which allows him to remain at Djurgårdens IF until the summer.

Barcelona have also been credited with an interest by Fotbolskanalen so United may well have to get a move on if they are to sign the talented teenager.
