Mason Greenwood is set to make the Olympique Marseille decision that will please Man Utd

Manchester United are heading into arguably the most important summer window since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and Mason Greenwood has given them a boost.

Man Utd sold Mason Greenwood for an unexpectedly high figure of £25 million in the summer, considering the circumstances.

Since then, Greenwood has done well in France and scored goals aplenty, but questions about his professionalism have resurfaced of late.

Greenwood’s tiff with Roberto de Zerbi made his future unclear at the club and the latest reports suggest he’s made a decision that should please Man Utd.

Mason Greenwood makes Olympique Marseille decision

Greenwood has been one of the top performers for Marseille this season, scoring 16 goals and assisting four in 28 league appearances.

Greenwood started well at Marseille and has kept that form up throughout, although De Zerbi calling him out publicly for a lack of effort was a strain.

Now, it seems like Greenwood has made a decision as well, with French outlet Le10Sport reporting that the player feels he’s outgrown the club already.

The report states that Greenwood will look to engineer an exit from the club in the summer as he’s gained a reputation of being a ‘soloist’.

Former LOSC player Ludovic Obraniak said: “Greenwood is still in a situation where he is persona non grata in England. No English club wants to hear about him. Marseille took a lot of blows going into this case.

“If I am in the player’s place, I have gratitude towards the club… but he is preparing his departure by doing things, you see: 17 goals, 3 assists. He is a soloist. And I see him taking Olympique de Marseille more as an opportunity to move on, rather than a desire to commit for the long term.”

Mason Greenwood’s transfer will boost Man Utd

United sold Greenwood for £25 million but Ineos inserted a sell-on clause which entitles them to a percentage of the profit from his sale.

That clause, reportedly set at around 40-50% of the profit, could see the club’s coffers get richer by, say, £12.5 million if Marseille manage to sell him for £50 million.

For a player who’s proven to be a reliable goalscorer everywhere he goes, that is undoubtedly a fee that will attract many suitors in Spain or Italy.

Furthermore, Greenwood’s book value at United is zero, so any fee from that sell-on will be pure profit and theoretically allow United to spend up to £50 million even from a £10 million windfall.

United wouldn’t have thought that the sell-on clause will come into effect so soon but when bad news financially is all they’re getting, this comes as a huge boost to their finances.
