Manchester United youngster Charlie Wellens subject of interest from promotion hopefuls

Manchester United youngster Charlie Wellens is reportedly the subject of interest from League One side Barnsley, according to Alan Nixon.

The 20-year-old made six appearances, which saw him score his first professional goal, for National League side Oldham Athletic during a loan spell at Boundary Park earlier in the campaign.

But having been signed by former Latics manager John Sheridan, Wellens barely featured under David Unsworth and made just three appearances which yielded 79 minutes under the former Everton left-back.

Wellens’ loan spell at Oldham was due to run until January 8, but United and the National League side agreed to let the right-back, who can also play in midfield, return to Carrington early last month.

Wellens is yet to play for United since returning to the club, but given his links with a move to Barnsley, United could well be wrapping him up in cotton wool to prevent suffering an injury which could scupper any potential move before the January transfer window closes.

Barnsley currently sit sixth in League One, which is the last play-off spot, and the Oakwell side will no doubt be targeting an immediate return to the Championship after suffering relegation last season.

Having endured a frustrating couple of months with Oldham, Wellens will be hoping to fare better and be handed more game time if a move to Barnsley does materialise.

Wellens’ only prior appearances against Football League sides have come via United’s Under-21 side participating in the EFL Trophy.

The Manchester United youngster, who has trained with the first team, is yet to make his senior debut for the Red Devils.

His contract at the Theatre of Dreams expires in June.

Wellens could be one of several Manchester United youngsters to depart the club in the last two weeks of the winter window, but with Wellens’ contract expiring in five months time, it will be interesting to see whether if he did depart it would be on loan or a permanent move.
