Manchester United are reported to be eyeing a big investment in the January transfer window to strengthen the squad.

A difficult start to the season has left Manchester United bottom of the Champions League group with two games remaining. While this could yet be turned around, it highlights just how challenging this campaign has been for Erik ten Hag‘s side.

The team are sixth in the Premier League, having rallied back from a woeful start, but face a challenging run of fixtures over the next month.

United will then lose players to the African Cup of Nations in January, while an injury crisis has devastated the club’s options in key positions, and placed extra stress on the players still available.

Manchester United plans for January

A new report from The Guardian claims Manchester United want four new signings in January. Yes, four.

And none of them include a back-up goalkeeper either, which often pushes up the volume of total deals done.

The positions Manchester United are reportedly looking to recruit are as follows…

There is reported to be an acceptance that signing all four will be challenging, however, this is United’s current aim. It could depend somewhat on the club’s minority takeover taking a step forward.

Striker should be top priority

A striker needs to be Manchester United’s top priority, to take pressure off Rasmus Hojlund. The 20-year-old recently suffered an injury and has been utilised as a regular starter. He is yet to score in the Premier League, although is the Champions League’s joint-highest scorer.

United are open to offers to players to raise funds, with Anthony Martial named in the report. His contract expires in the summer, and is an injury risk waiting to happen. If a good bid comes in, United would be mad to reject it.

The desire to move for a midfielder casts further doubt on whether Sofyan Amrabat‘s deal will be made permanent, while the club looking for a defender asks more questions over Raphael Varane, who is not a regular starter any more, despite Lisandro Martinez‘s injury.
