Manchester United target now ‘compared to Odegaard and de Jong’, club watching three of Europe’s best teenagers

Lucas Bergvall, Sverre Nypan and Karol Borys have all been included in The Guardian’s list of ‘the best young talents in world football’ amid interest in the trio from Manchester United.

Earlier this week, Gabriel Martinelli’s former coach at FC Ituano admitted the now-Arsenal star was left rather dejected after Manchester United opted not to sign him, despite running the rule over the Brazilian on no fewer than four occasions (The Athletic).

It’s probably safe to assume United would happily turn back the clock if they knew what Martinelli – who was even pictured in a Red Devils training kit – would turn into at the Emirates.

Only time will tell, however, if United are left with similar pangs of regret over being unable to sign Lucas Bergvall and Karol Borys. As UnitedinFocus reported back in 2022, Bergvall and Borys once featured in a 6-1 win for Man United’s U16 side during a trial of their own.

Manchester United eyeing a trio of teen talents

A year on, Erik ten Hag’s side are yet to return for either player, though interest in Bergvall remains. The late Tommy Moller Nielsen admitted back in April that he was continuing to keep tabs on the 17-year-old Djurgarden’s wonderkid on behalf of the Premier League giants.

Now, both Bergval and Borys – who plies his trade in Poland for Slask Warsaw – have been included among The Guardian’s annual list of the 60 ‘best young talents in world football’.

Ditto Sverre Nypan. The Sun reported back in May that United had been watching the Rosenborg teenager for at least 12 months, and comparisons with two of the finest, most technically-gifted midfielders in European football are proving to be a further boost to Nypan’s burgeoning reputation.

United have to wait until these players reach 18 to sign them, due to Brexit rules. The days of signing the likes of Alejandro Garnacho at 16 are long gone, with new regulations introduced in late 2020.

‘Compared to Odegaard and de Jong’

“Blessed with superb ability to read the game and vision, Nypan has been compared to Martin Odegaard and Frenkie de Jong,” The Guardian write, labelling Norway’s latest baby-faced whizzkid a ‘ray of light’ in a pitch-black season for embattled Rosenborg.

Nypan, at just 16, is already a regular in the starting XI. He’s scored three goals in 18 league games this term and, in a boost to United’s hopes of fighting off competition from rivals Man City and co, he is understood to be a boyhood Red Devils fanatic, although the prospect of continuing his development alongside a certain Erling Haaland at the Etihad may test those allegiances (TV2).
