Manchester United are among the clubs chasing Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, and there is fresh indication he could leave Benfica at the end of this season.

The Athletic report United consider Nunez the top option aside from Harry Kane, who could be too expensive to sign.

Nunez has scored 28 goals this season, and now he has stated he is leaving his agent.

The striker last night posted on social media: “I want to clarify that I will not renew my contract with my representative Edgardo Lasalvia. I also want to clarify that neither my family nor I have received any threats and we are fine.”

United would have to pay up

Nunez will not come cheap, and if Jorge Mendes is involved, the striker will secure a big deal no doubt, one way or another.

United have dealt with Mendes for years, most recently with Cristiano Ronaldo, and while this does not offer any guarantees, it cannot hurt.

The Sun report Nunez is keen to move to the Premier League, but is also keen to play in the Champions League. United face an uphill challenge to finish in the top four.

The club may have to hope that the challenge of leading the line for Ten Hag’s new look era appeals to the striker.

European football journalist Andy Brassell told Talksport: “He’s got all the attributes that make you think he would end up in England at some point.

“He’s strong, he’s physical, can hold the ball up, he’s a great finisher of course, but he can also run the channels as well. He’s just a bull of a centre-forward, he occupies defenders and not just one defender, but central defenders so well.”

Nunez is Edinson Cavani’s successor at international level, and it would be a great fit if he is able to succeed him at club level too.
