Manchester United are in talks to lock down midfielder Kobbie Mainoo amid lingering rumours of interest from Manchester City.
United’s season has been a huge disappointment, especially after such an encouraging first season under Erik ten Hag last term.
If there is one positive though, it is the emergence of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Fans always love to see young players breaking through from the academy into the first team and Mainoo has done it with aplomb.
The 18-year-old has been turning in performance well beyond his years and he should be a fixture of the United side for years to come – as long as he has a new contract wrapped up.
Manchester United in Kobbie Mainoo contract talks
The Mirror now report that United are in talks to extend Mainoo’s contract.
It’s stated that the teenager is in line to treble his wages from £20,000-a-week to around £60,000-a-week.
The deal would see Mainoo commit his future to United until the summer of 2030.
The report claims that Mainoo’s deal would also feature triggers, allowing him to becoming one of United’s top earners if he continues to shine in the Premier League.
This would be a huge deal for United, locking down Mainoo for years to come and, hopefully, building the midfield around him.
Of course, Mainoo needs to keep developing and shining; we have seen so many United youngsters fall by the wayside in years gone by and Mainoo is no sure thing despite his impressive season.

Manchester City could be left disappointed
There have been admiring glances from other clubs as well though with Mainoo reportedly fancied by Manchester City.
United’s bitter rivals have had an eye on Mainoo since he trained with the club at Under-9 level.
City have maintained that interest and reports in November suggested that they were keeping tabs on his contract situation.
United certainly won’t want to lose Mainoo and will be even more determined to keep him out of City’s clutches.
Let’s hope these talks progress well and Mainoo finalises a new deal soon, leaving City to miss out.
