Manchester United miss out as £22m deal for midfielder now ‘imminent’

A move to Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund is ‘imminent’ for Felix Nmecha as Premier League giants Manchester United miss out on another former Man City kid.

Old Trafford is threatening to become something of a familiar destination these days for players with a past in Sky Blue. Jadon Sancho is wearing the red of Manchester United these days.

Speculation, meanwhile, has suggested at different stages of this year that Jeremie Frimpong, Adrien Rabiot and Felix Nmecha – who had all spent time at United’s local rivals earlier in their careers – could join Sancho on the red side of the City.

Then again, with United moving on from their right-back targets, with Rabiot expected to sign a new deal at Juventus, and with Nmecha closing in on a move to Borussia Dortmund, the chances of any of the aforementioned trio joining the second stage of Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford revolution appear to be diminishing.

Manchester United set to miss out on Felix Nmecha

Dortmund, WAZ report, will sign Nmecha imminently. BVB will pay £22 million, while paying the athletic midfielder a cool £100,000-a-week.

Nmecha will, for all intents and purposes, fill a Jude Bellingham-shaped hole in Edin Terzic’s engine room following the Englishman’s big-money move to Real Madrid. Nmecha shares Bellingham’s ball-carrying ability and vision. He even wears the same shirt number, enjoying a superb breakthrough campaign in 2022/23 with the number 22 on his back.

Manchester United, according to Sport1, had spoken to Nmecha’s father earlier in the window about a potential return to England’s North West.

The likelihood is, however, that Nmecha was always viewed as a back-up option should their pursuit of Chelsea’s Mason Mount fall through. And while Chelsea rejected United’s third bid for the Stamford Bridge academy graduate over the weekend, there remains a quiet confidence in Mount’s camp that he will end up getting the move he’s been angling for.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United’s £55 million bid remains on the table. Mount, meanwhile, has told Chelsea that either he leaves now or he departs for nothing in 12 months’ time.
