Manchester United are making a move to ‘hijack’ Jack Butland’s planned move to Rangers as a free agent.

The Scottish Sun report Manchester United are ready to double Jack Butland’s salary to try and sign him to a new deal.

Butland signed for Manchester United on loan in January to provide cover, although is yet to play a first team game.

The Athletic has reported Crystal Palace are set to let Butland leave on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30.

Manchester United plan Jack Butland offer

A report in The Scottish Sun in late April had claimed Jack Butland was ‘on the brink’ of signing with Rangers.

But no deal has yet materialised. The latest report claims while they are happy to match his Crystal Palace salary, Macnhester United are prepared to double it.

Erik ten Hag is said to want to retain Butland’s services as a back-up goalkeeper for next season.

Tom Heaton is out of contract this summer, and so even if David de Gea stays and United sign a new goalkeeper this summer, Ten Hag will want a third option.

Butland, 30, is a former England international who is at an interesting stage of his career.

Does he take the money and accept being a back-up at Manchester United? Or will he opt for Rangers and take the opportunity to play regular football?

Rangers had believed Butland was willing to move to Scotland, but now hold reservations over whether they will be able to do the deal. Manchester United’s offer, financially, is Butland’s clear best option.

It would make sense for United to get this all sorted out early, so it does not distract from more important transfer business when the summer really gets underway.
