Manchester United have held talks over the signing of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax and they are progressing well.

Goal claim that United are relaxed over their approach to the signing of the Argentine defender despite interest from Arsenal.

The Gunners have bid for the defender while United have been tied up trying to sign Frenkie de Jong, and more recently Tyrell Malacia.

But the report says they are taking the same approach to getting Martinez as they did with the young Dutch defender from Feyenoord.

Manchester United talks with Martinez progressing well

The discussions over landing Martinez are said to be progressing well, and United are asking to be kept informed over what happens with Arsenal.

That is similar to what happened with Malacia, where United let Lyon do a lot of the heavy lifting with getting a fee agreed before they stepped in.

This seems to be United’s approach to avoid clubs asking for too much money and inflated fees when they hear of interest from Old Trafford.

Perhaps United would let Arsenal get to an offer which is accepted by Ajax, before deciding whether to swoop at that price.

Erik ten Hag has of course worked with Martinez at Ajax, and has called him ‘excellent‘. That means it is no surprise he wants him at Old Trafford.

Liverpool let Tottenham agree the fee for Luis Diaz in January before stealing in and getting him to come to Anfield.

That seems to be what United want to do here, although they are the only bidders for de Jong and that negotiation has become a familiar, public game of poker.

It remains to be seen if it will work, with doubts over whether United can bring multiple deals to the boil at the same time.
