Manchester United explore Benjamin Sesko exchange, RB Leipzig’s ‘dream’ swap deal could be blocked

Manchester United are targeting the signing of a new striker this summer and appear to have picked out RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as the top target.

Ruben Amorim wanted attacking signings this summer, and Manchester United have delivered two quality additions.

Matheus Cunha joined United early in the window, before Bryan Mbeumo finally arrived at Old Trafford last week.

Cunha and Mbeumo should play as number 10s in Amorim’s setup, and a new striker is the next top priority.

United may need to offload some players first, but Amorim’s revamped front line could now feature a new striker ahead of Cunha and Mbeumo.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that United are moving to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, with face-to-face talks held in Germany.

Manchester United consider Benjamin Sesko exchange

United still face competition from Newcastle United for Sesko, but there is a belief that the Slovenian fancies a move to Old Trafford.

Christopher Vivell is a huge fan of Sesko and has history with the giant striker, having helped sign him for both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig.

Vivell is now hoping to bring Sesko to United, though the finances of the deal could be tricky after snapping up Cunha and Mbeumo.

Fabrizio Romano now reports that United could explore an exchange deal with RB Leipzig, with one player noted for a potential swap.

Speaking on YouTube, Romano suggested that United striker Rasmus Hojlund is a ‘dream’ target for RB Leipzig.

The Dane didn’t exactly impress last season, and that is exactly why United are now interested in signing Sesko.

RB Leipzig seemingly still see major potential in Hojlund, but Romano believes that a swap deal will be ‘unlikely’.

Romano noted that Hojlund simply isn’t interested in leaving United, and would prefer to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

United are still trying to thrash out a deal for Sesko, but an exchange involving Hojlund looks more than a little tricky.

“Manchester United are also showing Leipzig the opportunity to maybe include a player into the deal for Benjamin Sesko,” said Romano.

“Then we have to see if this player will be open to going to RB Leipzig, because they won’t play European football for the first time in many years, so I don’t think it’s going to be easy to include a player in this deal, but it is showing how Manchester United are really trying to do business for Benjamin Sesko.

“For example, one of the names, a dream target for RB Leipzig, could be Rasmus Hojlund, but let me say that, at the moment, from the player’s side, the player would love to stay at Manchester United.

“The player is not entertaining any negotiation with other clubs at this stage, so the situation is quiet,” he added.

Rasmus Hojlund’s boyhood love for Manchester United in play

Hojlund’s priority appears to be an Old Trafford stay, and perhaps that shouldn’t be a surprise.

The Dane has only spent two years at United and may believe that he can rediscover the form he showed in his debut season.

It’s also important to note that Hojlund is a boyhood United fan, and the move to Manchester was a dream come true for him.

Hojlund may not want to give up on that dream so quickly, and could be a major part of his desire to stay.

It’s all well and good signing boyhood United fans, but moving them on if things go wrong isn’t quite so easy.

Hojlund has shown some flashes of his quality in pre-season and with a move to RB Leipzig seemingly unlikely, United may need to focus on getting the best out of him, rather than moving him on.
