Manchester United could sell £31m player despite contract decision

Manchester United are now planning to extend the contract of defender Victor Lindelof amid rising interest from Italy.

United brought in just one centre back over the summer and it certainly wasn’t a name many expected.

Jonny Evans came in on a free transfer, offering depth at the back amid questions over Raphael Varane’s injury record.

The Frenchman hasn’t eased those concerns this season whilst doubts remain over Harry Maguire’s future.

Add in a Lisandro Martinez injury and United’s centre back ranks have been less than settled in recent times.

That may well be why United are now trying to tie down another centre back amid rumours about his future…

Manchester United looking to extend Victor Lindelof deal

The Daily Star now report that United will extend Victor Lindelof’s deal until the summer of 2025.

The Swede’s contract has a one-year option included and United have allegedly decided to trigger that clause.

Lindelof’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season but United will now move to extend his deal.

It’s added that United may still decide to cash in on Lindelof though with a £15million asking price on his head.

Italian duo Juventus and AC Milan are thought to be interested in signing Lindelof but United are looking to protect against losing him for nothing by activating this contract clause.

Lindelof may still be in danger next summer

We are still expecting changes to the United back line in 2024 with Lindelof potentially on the chopping block.

Signed from Benfica for around £31million in 2017, Lindelof maybe hasn’t lived up to expectations but has been a solid squad player over the last six years.

Lindelof has started five Premier League games this season and both Champions League games so far, proving dependable whilst others around him struggle.

Still, The Manchester Evening News report that United would like to sign another athletic defender to compete with Varane for next season.

That could be a replacement for Maguire, but there is still a strong chance that United look to sell both Maguire and Lindelof to bring in a couple of new – hopefully durable – centre backs.
