Manchester United wanted to sign Djordje Petrovic as backup to Andre Onana but were priced out of a deal for the Chelsea stopper.
The London Evening Standard claim that Serbian stopper Djordje Petrovic is in line to start for Chelsea against Blackburn Rovers tonight.
Petrovic joined from New England Revolution over the summer but has served as backup to Robert Sanchez.
Now in line to start tonight, Petrovic has been analysed by the Standard as he prepares for a Chelsea debut.
They claim that United wanted to sign Petrovic as backup to Andre Onana but the price was just too expensive.
Nottingham Forest and Nantes were in a similar boat, with the Revs simply pricing almost everybody out of the race before Chelsea struck a deal.
Who is Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic?
Petrovic emerged in his native Serbia with Cukaricki before landing a big 2022 move to New England Revolution.
Petrovic was signed to replace Matt Turner following his move to Arsenal.
The 24-year-old made a big impact in the States with New England Revolution ace DeJuan Jones hailing him as ‘absolutely incredible’.
Petrovic has only earned two caps for Serbia but Chelsea were happy to cough up around £13.6million to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
That’s a decent fee to pay for a backup goalkeeper – and a fee that United just weren’t willing to pay.

Altay Bayindir made more sense than Petrovic for Manchester United
United splashed big money on Onana and won’t have wanted to throw another hefty price on another goalkeeper.
Petrovic was clearly highly rated inside United but paying nearly £14million just didn’t make sense.
United did end up signing another goalkeeper, landing Turkish international Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.
Look at the price United paid for that signing; just £4.3million for an international stopper with nearly 150 Fenerbahce games under his belt.
That signing ticked the right boxes for United and left crucial funds in the bank for loan signings Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat before the deadline.
Maybe Petrovic will become a star down the line, but the Bayindir signing just made more sense for United’s budget.
