Man Utd target Kees Smit drops hint over where he wants to play if he leaves AZ Alkmaar

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Kees Smit, a player who has his own ideas on his first big move.

For a generation, the top Dutch players have left the Eredivisie to try their luck abroad, and hot prospect Kees Smit is expected to do the same.

Smit has earned attention from his performances at AZ Alkmaar, with The Athletic reporting last month that United are interested.

It was claimed that United face competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona, and this is where it could get tricky.

Kees Smit eyeing Spain move

Smit, 20, is among the central midfielders Manchester United have been linked to amid the club’s plan to rebuild at the position this summer.

In an interview with Dutch outlet Rodi Media, Smit has hinted that his preference would be a move to Spain – although he admits there is total uncertainty over whether it will happen in 2026.

Smit said: “Spain would suit me. But I don’t know if it will happen. I have my doubts.

“Perhaps I’ll stay at AZ for another year? Talks are ongoing. Max and my agent discussed it recently. I told them I’m considering it.”

The challenge is the lack of spending power from La Liga sides compared to Premier League clubs.

Smit even admitted to inquisitively learning Spanish, although does explain that his English is good enough anyway.

“Sometimes I ask Chavez (the Mexican player at AZ) how to say a Dutch word in Spanish. I’m not taking Spanish lessons or anything like that. My English is acceptable. I manage with that.”

Speaking a month ago, Smit admitted that he had expected to leave AZ this summer, stating that his priority was game time.

“Basically I just want to play a lot. That is important to me.”

After seeing the plight of Dutchman Donny van de Beek at Manchester United, Smit’s concerns over playing are perfectly understandable.

That situation could even give United reason to be hesitant over Smit too.

If you were Man United’s director of football with £200m to spend in the summer, what would be your dream window?

Kees Smit’s backing from Rio Ferdinand

Kees Smit has been singled out repeatedly for praise by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Speaking recently on his podcast, Ferdinand explained: “Kees Smit, he is the guy, guys, he is the one I’m hanging my hat on that I would go and get. I would give everything they want.

I would throw in a couple of players if they want. Would AZ Alkmaar take any of our players? I would give a couple who are on the fringes.

“This kid, I’m telling you, he’s got crazy ability.

“He’s got the technique, under pressure, can take it deep, around the backline, in the eight area or 10 as well. Pure comfort under any type of press. I love him.”
