Man Utd stance on signing Jeremie Frimpong this summer, player ready to return to England in ‘expensive’ deal

Manchester United were dealt a massive transfer blow on Friday as Geovany Quenda to Chelsea was completed out of nowhere.

One summer signing which looked nailed on was Ruben Amorim reuniting with his Sporting Lisbon prospect Geovany Quenda.

Manchester United had been keen on Quenda for months, even before Amorim’s arrival, and these links only gained strength after the new head coach arrived.

Ineos were thought to already be discussing a £33m deal, with Quenda agreeing personal terms with United ahead of a move to Old Trafford.

However, Friday morning brought the news that Chelsea had signed Quenda from Sporting, stealing a march on United, who were unable to move quickly due to financial constraints.

Due to this, United have likely missed out on Amorim’s number one priority but luckily there is no shortage of right wing-backs right now who the Red Devils could pivot toward.

Manchester United remain in contact with Jeremie Frimpong ahead of summer move

With Quenda off the table, United will now have to move further down the list. Roger Fernandes is an exciting option for United, who has actually outperformed Quenda in Portugal this season.

Now, United in Focus understands that Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong is also an option for Ineos, as Graeme Bailey explains.

“Jeremie Frimpong is a player that Manchester United had a historical interest in back in 2023 under Erik ten Hag, I am told they pushed for him.

“Since then Frimpong has progressed as one of the most in-demand right-backs in Europe.

“Man City and Liverpool have both been in talks with him, they like him and the player I am told is ready to return to England.”

With Frimpong ready to return to England, the question will be whether United are in the fold which United in Focus understands to be the case.

“United as it stands am told have maintained communication with his people, they know what is going on – but they are not at the head of the queue at this stage. Indeed we are talking well in excess of £40million perhaps close to £50million – that’s a lot of money but this right wing-back role is an important one for United and Ruben Amorim’s system.

“Is Frimpong an ideal fit? Only United and Amorim can answer that but he is very attack-minded so you would think he could slot in, but we will see.

“Also let’s not forget we are entering a World Cup year, Frimpong will have that in mind too – he has just seen Joshua Zirkzee bombed out of the Dutch squad because of what has happened to him at United, so that could play a part too.”

Frimpong is a long-term United target, but would he be the kind of player Amorim needs as an alternative to Quenda?

How Jeremie Frimpong compares to Geovany Quenda

If United were to sign Frimpong, it would be a ready-made option who is coming into his prime years instead of a youngster who would need time to bed in.

Amorim would love Frimpong’s qualities and they correlate well with Quenda’s which could indicate he is a good player for the system being implemented.

The pair have very similar qualities, with FBRef even listing Frimpong as the sixth most similar player to Quenda.

Both are exceptional athletes, with deadly attacking qualities that would be assets to Amorim’s winger-back role on the right side.

Frimpong would be a great option, but the price and likely contractual demands may leave Ineos forced to aim for a younger player.
