Man Utd make Brentford’s Igor Thiago an exception in search for new striker

Manchester United have identified Brentford striker Igor Thiago as a potential target as they weigh up their options to strengthen the attacking department.

Last summer, Manchester United focused on revamping the attack with signings such as Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.

There was a clear improvement from United in attack, but the uncertainty surrounding Joshua Zirkzee’s future could influence the Red Devils to sign another striker to provide competition or back-up for Sesko.

United will need more than one striker next season because there will be more fixtures at hand, especially after securing Champions League qualification.

Man Utd consider swoop for Igor Thiago

United are prioritising the midfield department this summer, but that doesn’t mean the club won’t consider strengthening other areas of Michael Carrick’s team.

It is understood that United have a ‘one in, one out’ policy when it comes to Zirkzee, with the Netherlands international heavily linked with an exit.

Zirkzee has considerable interest from Serie A, and his sale would help generate funds for a replacement. Ideally, a striker with an eye for goal, unlike the former Bologna forward.

Thiago Igor from Brentford is on United’s radar after a terrific season in the Premier League.

According to Ben Jacobs, United are interested in Thiago, despite their preference for a new striker being an “older and more experienced” option. That makes Thiago an exception.

“While it is very initial and player led at this stage, Man United are just starting to look at the market in the old and more experienced category of strikers, with one or two exceptions like Igor Thiago – in case Zirkzee leaves,” Jacobs told The United Stand.

Brentford will demand big money for Thiago after he made the team of the season nine months ago. He went on to score 22 goals to earn himself a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the World Cup.

Igor Thiago record against Man Utd

Thiago has two goals in three appearances against United in the Premier League.

United would be getting a Premier League-proven player if they signed Thiago ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

After such an impressive campaign with Brentford, Thiago would offer strong competition for Sesko.

Perhaps stronger than the Slovenian would have hoped.
