Manchester United are reportedly one of the clubs that are still in the race to sign a defensive midfielder who could be an alternative target to Morten Hjulmand.
Morten Hjulmand has been on Manchester United’s radar and the 26-year-old defensive midfielder is all too familiar with former Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.
The 26-year-old Danish talent ascended to the role of Sporting skipper in 2024 under Ruben Amorim and has become a key player for the Portuguese outfit.
Hjulmand is under contract with Sporting until 2028 after the Denmark international arrived at the Estadio Jos Alvalade from Serie A outfit Lecce in 2023.
However, Sporting are expected to remain firm over their asking price for the United-linked Hjulmand, who has a whopping £69m (€80m) release clause.
United manager Amorim is expected to sign a new midfielder this summer and Sporting skipper Hjulmand has been tipped as one potential target for the club.

Man Utd could pursue Leicester City defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as a different option to Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand
Wilfred Ndidi has been linked with Manchester United and the 28-year-old Nigerian defensive midfielder is now tipped to leave Leicester City this summer.
The Nigeria international has a £9m release clause in his Leicester City contract, which became active with the Foxes’ relegation in the 2024-25 season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy took over at Leicester City during the 2024-25 campaign and the United legend was unable to keep the Foxes in the Premier League.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on talkSPORT that Premier League side West Ham have become the latest club interested in signing Wilfred Ndidi this summer.
The Peoples Person cited the report from Ben Jacobs that the Nigeria and Leicester midfielder is ‘heard on the radar’ for Graham Potter’s Hammers side this summer.
Wilfred Ndidi has five clubs linked with him and Saudi Arabia are keeping tabs on the Man Utd-linked midfielder’s situation
According to Ben Jacobs on talkSPORT, United have been one of the European clubs that have ‘discussed’ the potential idea of signing Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi.
It is believed that the Red Devils will face competition from Premier League clubs like Everton and West Ham in the race to land the Foxes midfielder.
However, both Serie A side Juventus and La Liga outfit Real Betis are also keeping an eye on Ndidi, whose current contract with Leicester expires in 2027.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia are believed to be interested in the United-linked midfielder and Jacobs suggested that the player’s future could ‘resolve itself relatively quickly.’
