Man United providing ‘strong competition’ for Italian defender, Rasmus Hojlund could be the key

Manchester United have identified another highly-rated young defender for next summer and could be ready to make a move for him if the price is right.

The player in question is Atalanta defender Giorgo Scalvini who is a young man with plenty of potential and the 19-year-old could be the next Atalanta export into the Premier League.

It seems likely that Manchester United are keen on signing a replacement for Raphael Varane, whose injury issues have kept him out for most of the season.

Erik ten Hag wants a young defender he can build the defence around according to The Mirror and Scalvini may well fit the bill.

Scalvini interest

According to a report from Tuttosport, Inter Milan are keen on the Italian defender and could be ready to make a move for a relatively decent price of just €40 million (£34 million).

However, the Italian report goes on to say that they would face ‘strong competition’ from United and the other obstacle that Inter Milan could have is the money Atalanta would demand.

Despite £34 million not seeming like a lot in today’s climate, for the Italian giants, that represents a heavy outlay due to the lack of money coming into the division.

This could give the edge to the Red Devils and another aspect of this deal could work in United’s favour.

Hojlund deal

Tuttosport goes on to claim that United established previous relations with the Italian side when they signed Rasmus Hojlund and could have the edge because of this.

The price too, which is seemingly causing issues for Inter, wouldn’t be a problem for the Red Devils and a deal could be worked on quite comfortably.

Due to United’s recent money struggles, it does seem unlikely that they would be able to shell out £34 million for an unproven defender when it seems like Champions League football will be eluding them next summer. Only time will tell.
