Manchester United’s chances of signing Andrey Santos this summer were just boosted by Newcastle United’s transfer business.

Following the news that Manchester United missed out on Mateus Fernandes, it was quickly reported that there is now interest in Andrey Santos of Chelsea.

Santos’ data impressed United’s recruitment team and his £50 million valuation makes him a cheaper alternative to other Premier League-proven options.

But reports suggested that Newcastle also liked Andrey Santos and were showing interest in a move. But their new deal for Sean Steur suggests they have moved on.

Man Utd are looking at signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea… What is your verdict?

What is your advice to Ineos on the state of the transfer window so far?

Man United are now alone in Andrey Santos race

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have struck a £23 million move for Ajax midfielder Steur, who could arrive at St James’ Park as the replacement for Sandro Tonali.

The reason why Newcastle’s move for Steur impacts the Santos deal is not just because of their interest, but because Santos wants regular game time.

Santos had slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and he wants to play regularly. Newcastle’s move for Steur only adds to the midfield competition he’d have at St James’ Park.

Not only can United offer Santos a strong long-term project and Champions League football, but he also looks more likely to be a regular starter at Old Trafford.

Which transfer targets do you NOT want Man Utd to sign?

Let's turn the transfer question on it's head, and give Jason Wilcox some advice…

Ineos could haggle for Andrey Santos price

If United are the only team remaining in the race for Santos, and if the 22-year-old is prioritising a move to Old Trafford, it puts Ineos in a strong negotiating position.

Chelsea want £50 million for Santos, but it is well-known that the Blues need cash this summer to fund their own transfer business.

Chelsea were tough in negotiations for the £40 million Alejandro Garnacho deal, now United can return the favour for Santos, knowing there are other targets available if talks collapse.

A favourable deal for Santos would leave United with more than enough of their transfer budget to go and sign a marquee midfielder like Aurelien Tchouameni to complete the summer rebuild.
