Luton Town open talks to sign former Manchester United wonderkid

Manchester United will be watching with interest as Birmingham City midfielder Tahith Chong nears a move to Luton Town.

United fans will remember the hype when Chong arrived from Feyenoord back in 2016.

The Dutch club thought they had a real star on their hands before United pounced to sign him.

The hope was that wonderkid Chong would kick on to become a first-team star at Old Trafford but it never quite happened.

Chong managed just 16 first-team appearances for United and failed to score a single goal.

Loans to Werder Bremen and Club Brugge didn’t take Chong any closer to the United first team and he was sent off to Birmingham City for the 2021-22 campaign.

Chong impressed for the Blues, who then struck a £1.45million permanent deal which could treble with add-ons according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell.

Whitwell added that United have a 25% sell-on clause, which could be crucial with Chong now nearing a Premier League return.

Luton Town in talks to sign Tahith Chong

The Daily Mail report that Luton Town have now opened talks to sign Chong after winning promotion to the Premier League.

The Hatters are unlikely to go crazy with their signings.

Rotherham United star Chiedozie Ogbene has joined on a free transfer and Barnsley defender Mads Juel Andersen looks set to follow.

Chong now fits a similar mould; if he kicks on and shines in the Premier League then great but he can shine in the Championship if Luton go down.

Chong has proven himself to be Mr Versatile for Birmingham, playing in a variety of midfield and attacking roles – which seemingly appeals to Luton.

It’s unclear just how much Luton will be paying for Chong but United will certainly be paying attention.

A quarter of the full price – or the profit – would be a nice little boost for United this summer.

Seeing Chong feature regularly in the Premier League would be great to see too as he finally start to fulfil his potential at 23.
