Manchester United defender Teden Mengi could leave the club this week with Luton Town looking to strike a deal.

We are expecting to see a number of United departures ahead of the transfer deadline.

Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace should be done soon enough and Lorient are now chasing Donny van de Beek.

Others may go out on loan with Alvaro Fernandez, Shola Shoretire, Hannibal Mejbri and Marc Jurado bound to attract interest.

Some players will have plenty to think about as they seek first-team playing time – and one of those is defender Teden Mengi.

Luton Town eyeing late Teden Mengi move

The Telegraph now report that Luton Town are looking into a late deal to sign United defender Mengi.

The Hatters have conceded seven goals in their first two Premier League games following their unexpected promotion.

Rob Edwards and co likely knew that this would be a difficult season but some more defensive solidity would be welcomed.

Luton were never going to splash the cash and instead seem to be focusing on signings who could make a big impact in the Championship if they do go down.

Mengi is one option and Ryan Taylor of The Express suggests that this would be a permanent transfer.

United will allegedly let Mengi leave and it’s now up to Luton to come up with an acceptable offer for the 21-year-old.

Luton are also looking at centre back Axel Tuanzebe, who was released by United this summer.

Mengi and Tuanzebe came up in the United ranks, albeit four years apart, and could join forces at Kenilworth Road.

Mengi faces big decision on Manchester United future

Mengi hails from Manchester and first joined the United youth ranks at the age of just seven.

A first-team debut arrived in 2020 and Mengi then went out on loan to Derby County in 2021.

Then-Rams boss Wayne Rooney hailed Mengi as ‘excellent’ but his time at Pride Park was cut short due to injury – and that has sadly been a recurring theme.

United loaned Mengi to Birmingham City in January 2022 but hamstring problems damaged his impact.

Mengi didn’t make a first-team appearance last season and only managed five Premier League 2 outings as hamstring problems continued.

Now 21, Mengi may well need to come to a big decision on whether or not to call time on his United career.

A move to Luton would give Mengi a fresh start and a chance at first-team football if fit.

Giving up on United after so many years in the system isn’t easy but Mengi needs to think about his career – and Premier League action with Luton could be very appealing.
