Latest update on Manchester United ‘interest’ in Serge Gnabry and Federico Chiesa

Manchester United have received a double update in their search for forward options in the upcoming January transfer window to replace Jadon Sancho.

According to Dean Jones, speaking on GiveMeSport, Serge Gnabry and Federico Chiesa are targets for Manchester United this coming winter window but a move is seemingly unlikely.

Jadon Sancho’s future at United seems untenable as the winger continues to train away from the main squad and he is also, as it stands, still refusing to apologise to Erik ten Hag.

The volatile situation has left United with little choice but to look at alternative targets for the right-wing position as Antony’s short-term future also seems up in the air due to off-field issues.

Gnabry and Chiesa

Chiesa and Gnabry were discussed in relation to a move to Old Trafford as a replacement for the former Borussia Dortmund winger, but that is said to seems unlikely.

Jones told GiveMeSportthat neither Gnabry nor Chiesa will be available for transfer in the winter market, which United are reportedly keen to operate in to bring in a right-midfielder.

“I think it’s unreasonable to expect that Chiesa or Gnabry are genuinely likely signings for United right now,” Jones said.

“Obviously there is a good chance in January that United will recruit an attacker because of the disciplinary situations that have cut Ten Hag’s options but these two are pretty much out of their reach at the moment.”

Will United spend in January

If you look at the past three seasons of winter transfer market dealings, United have never pushed the boat out on new signings. Ten Hag was given Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst on loan, Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were given no signings at all.

Bruno Fernandes’s signing for United in the winter of 2020 is a perfect example of the transformative effect a new signing can have, but the club never utilises the winter window.

So this news that United might try and target signings in winter certainly seems unlikely unless, like last January, they would be emergency loan signings to carry the club through the season.

The fact that United may well have to, yet again, dip into the loan market probably highlights the issues at the club for all to see, something that fans of the Red Devils are becoming more and more accustomed to.
