Jonathan David justifies Man Utd links with latest Champions League display, 31 G/A striker helps keep Lille’s hopes alive

Manchester United will keep a close eye on the top leagues in their search for a new striker.

The issues that exist in front of goal have not improved since Ruben Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag as Manchester United head coach.

Rasmus Hojlund has gone 18 matches without a goal, Joshua Zirkzee is not a goalscorer, and to make matters worse, Amad Diallo has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an injury.

Manchester United’s lack of firepower in attack is one of the reasons why they are sitting 14th in the Premier League.

Ineos made three signings in January, but none of them were forward players. Instead, we saw two defenders arrive, including Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.

Ruben Amorim has outlined his desire for a new forward, so we should expect movement in the market this summer.

Jonathan David records 10th assist of the season

Lille were in Champions League action tonight as their trip to Borussia Dortmund ended as a 1-1 draw.

United target David played 90 minutes and was responsible for a through ball that set Haraldsson up for Lille’s 68’ minute equaliser.

It was the Canada international’s 10th assist of the season.

In total, David has registered 31 goal contributions in 38 matches for Lille this season.

That means the 25-year-old is outscoring all of United’s forward players since the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign.

In the Ligue 1 goalscoring charts, David is third with 13 behind Ousmane Dembele (18) and Mason Greenwood (15). He will be aiming to add to that tally when Lille face Montpellier on Saturday.

David’s form justifies the many transfer links he has been attached to in recent months, especially when United’s first-team is crying out for a striker who can provide goals.

Manchester United can sign Jonathan David for free

David is set to become one of the best free agent options on the market.

Along with former United academy graduate, Angel Gomes, David could leave Lille at the end of the season when his contract expires.

It remains to be seen how much money Ineos will give to Amorim for transfers in the summer, but there won’t be many strikers of David’s calibre available for free.

This could prove to be too good a deal to ignore.
