Manchester United have been linked with a move for Joao Gomes but Ruben Amorim won’t get the chance to watch the Wolves midfielder up close.

The transfer priority for Manchester United in 2026 is signing a central midfielder, and Ineos could make their move in January.

With Manuel Ugarte out of favour, Casemiro’s contract expiring and Kobbie Mainoo open to leaving, a midfield overhaul is on the horizon.

United have been linked to Joao Gomes and Wolves may be under pressure to sell considering they are on track to be relegated from the Premier League.

Gomes is open to joining United, but he will be denied the chance to impress Ruben Amorim next week.

Joao Gomes will miss Man Utd clash with suspension

United have been scouting Gomes since 2022 when he was playing for Flamengo, and he is back on the shopping list for 2026.

But when United travel to Molineux next week, Gomes will not be available to audition for the Red Devils.

That is because Gomes picked up a yellow card as Wolves lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest. It was his fifth of the season, meaning he has been handed a one-game suspension.

The upcoming run of fixtures looks extremely favourable for United on paper.

On Thursday, Amorim will look for back-to-back wins when West Ham travel to Old Trafford. The Hammers currently sit in the relegation spots with only three wins all season.

West Ham will be without Lucas Paqueta for the clash, and after that United will face a winless Wolves side who won’t have Gomes available.

Everything has lined up for United to take advantage and build up some momentum in the Premier League. Wolves have collected only two points from their opening 14 games. Anything other than a win would be a disaster for Amorim.
