Anwar El Ghazi has secured himself a move to Germany after Manchester United passed on a potential move for the winger.

United have been going through real issues out wide.

Antony is currently on a break from the club whilst Jadon Sancho remains out of Erik ten Hag’s plans as things stand.

Add in Amad Diallo’s injury and United’s options out wide have been decimated this season.

That resulted in some rumours about United looking to bring in a free agent earlier this month, with Anwar El Ghazi linked…

Anwar El Ghazi to Manchester United was quickly shot down

Reports from the Daily Mail earlier this month suggested that United were considering a deal to sign El Ghazi on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old was a free agent having been let go by PSV Eindhoven before the transfer deadline.

This was a rumour which really didn’t get pulses racing given that El Ghazi was solid if unspectacular at Aston Villa and a virtual ghost at Everton.

United fans who weren’t impressed had their fears almost immediately calmed as The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell suggested that El Ghazi was offered to United but there was no genuine interest.

We have now seen Bruno Fernandes and Facundo Pellistri feature on the right flank, with United happy to go with them rather than sign El Ghazi.

El Ghazi finds new club in Germany

The former Ajax winger has though found a new club as he looks to get his career back on track.

Bundesliga club Mainz have confirmed the signing of El Ghazi, handing him a two-year contract.

Mainz have been celebrating the move with boss Bo Svensson, praising his pace and ability to dribble past defenders.

“With the transfer of Anwar we’ve been given the chance to strengthen our attack with a player who’s already had an impressive career,” said El Ghazi. “With his ability in one-vs-one situations, his pace and his keenness to get on the ball, he’ll make us better. We’re very pleased that Anwar’s joined us,” he added.

Director of football Christian Heidel added that Mainz actually looked into signing El Ghazi over the summer and have now jumped at the chance to land him.

United chose not to bring in El Ghazi but he will now look to make a big impact in German football having finally landed a new club.
