Inter Milan should keep Manchester United target Andre Onana ‘if they want to win trophies’ but a move to the Premier League appears to be edging closer.
It was arguably less the double and more a double. But still, Andre Onana will leave the San Siro this summer after picking up two pieces of silverware in 2022/23. Inter Milan defeating Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final shortly after claiming the Supercoppa Italiana.
Champions League glory would allude Simone Inzaghi’s side; Rodri’s ruthlessness and Romelu Lukaku’s wastefulness costing the Nerazzuri in Istanbul. But Onana’s supreme performance on the biggest stage in football appears to have paved the way for a reunion with his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Onana’s agent was in Manchester this week (Gianluca di Marzio).
According to Sport Mediaset, United are now willing to meet Inter’s £42 million asking price; the prospect of David de Gea being swapped for a goalkeeper with the passing range of a seasoned playmaker reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s discarding of Joe Hart in favour of Claudio Bravo – and eventually Ederson – back in 2016.
Manchester United near Andre Onana deal
Inter’s well-publicised financial issues means the Italian giants are unlikely to stand in Onana’s way. Much to the disappointment of one of Onana’s San Siro predecessors.
“Football today is different than it was in my generation,” Sebastien Frey, who spent three years at the Nerazzuri between 1998 and 2001, tells Goal.
“(Former president Massimo) Moratti’s Inter could afford to keep a player regardless of the size of an offer that they received. Now, there are other needs to think about.
“But if it just depended on me, I would keep him. It’s difficult to find a great goalkeeper. If they want to win trophies, then they should keep him.
“Unfortunately, I think they’ll let him leave.”
Onana appears to have overtaken Porto’s Diogo Costa as Ten Hag’s number one choice between the sticks.
