Former Man Utd academy star Angel Gomes could make Premier League return after talks over loan

Former Manchester United academy prodigy Angel Gomes has been linked with a move away from Marseille. A return to the Premier League could be on the agenda for the Manchester-born playmaker.

There were high hopes for Angel Gomes at Manchester United, especially during his time in the academy.

Gomes made his United first team debut on May 21, 2017, at the age of 16 years and 263 days, becoming the club’s youngest player to play at senior level since 1953.

In doing so, Gomes replaced Wayne Rooney in a 2-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace.

Do you believe Manchester United can overhaul Arsenal and win the title?!

After becoming frustrated with the lack of first team opportunities, Gomes left United and eventually made a name for himself in Ligue 1 at Lille.

In the summer, Gomes linked up with Mason Greenwood at Marseille on a free transfer.

There are already uncertainties over his future under Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille after failing to cement a place in his side this season.

Wolves in talks over Angel Gomes loan move

It’s been six years since Gomes left the Premier League, but it would be fair to say a return would be welcomed by most United fans, even if it’s not Old Trafford that ends up being a destination of choice.

The 25-year-old made 10 appearances at the senior level after graduating from United’s academy

Gomes has made 20 appearances for Marseille this term, scoring four goals and assisting just once.

According to Sky Sports, Wolves are keen to sign Gomes in a straight loan deal, and talks are underway between the two clubs.

Gomes would be joining a Wolves side struggling in the Premier League and destined to go down with just eight points from 23 matches played.

On the plus side, however, it would be an opportunity for Gomes to play regularly and potentially earn a move back to England.

The England international still has a lot to offer in the game, even if his spell at Marseille hasn’t gone as planned.

When could Angel Gomes feature for Marseille next?

Gomes was left out of the Marseille squad that beat Lens 3-1 at the weekend, after playing just eight minutes in their 5-2 win over Angers the week beforehand.

It remains to be seen if Gomes will feature when Marseille take on Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday night. That will be his next chance to feature for the Ligue 1 outfit.

If talks to leave Marseille on loan advance over the coming days, there’s also a chance that Gomes has played his final game of the season under De Zerbi.
