Manchester United have enquired over a move to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on Saturday night that Manchester United had contacted Chelsea over a possible move for Marc Cucurella. There has been a potentially significant update.

The background to this is Manchester United suffering an injury to Luke Shaw. Tyrell Malacia is also out with injury.

This has left United looking for an emergency option at left-back to provide cover.

Marc Cucurella to Manchester United latest

Marc Cucurella is out of favour at Chelsea. He has not played a single minute of their opening three games.

It is just a year ago since Chelsea paid £62 million to sign him from Brighton. However, changes in management have led to him being an expensive spare part.

Fabrizio Romano reported last night that Chelsea are open to doing a deal with United.

He says: “Understand Chelsea are open to letting Cucurella leave on loan but only at their conditions (loan fee/salary coverage).”

It would make sense for Chelsea to get him off their wage bill, and United could surely find some funds for a loan fee for the versatile defender.

Manchester United have witnessed the two versions of Marc Cucurella

Manchester United have witnessed the two very different versions of Marc Cucurella over the past 18 months.

In the match at Stamford Bridge last October, Cucurella was substituted after just 36 minutes in the 1-1 draw, with Graham Potter making a tactical adjustment, with Manchester United dominating the early possession. He had been playing at wing-back – however, According to AS, Cucurella had been suffering from illness.

The better side of Cucurella was evident months earlier for Brighton when he played a key role in the Seagulls demolishing Ralf Rangnick’s side 4-0, even getting on the scoresheet with a marauding performance.

Erik ten Hag may be able to get the best out of him, even on a short-term basis until Shaw or Malacia return.
