Double deal would transform Manchester United midfield options

Manchester United are looking to strengthen in midfield and Moises Caicedo and Adrien Rabiot are two potential additions.

While striker and goalkeeper should be priority positions for Manchester United, it appears reshaping the midfield is also a focus for Erik ten Hag.

The Times reports United will turn to Moises Caicedo, while The Athletic claim the club have contacted Adrien Rabiot over a move.

This comes amid reports via The Mail that United are willing to listen to offers for Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek.

Tactical versatility

A double move for Adrien Rabiot and Moises Caicedo give Erik ten Hag increased versatility with his midfield options.

Unlike Mason Mount, Moises Caicedo can play in both Casemiro‘s role, and in Christian Eriksen‘s. This helps United to manage both players’ minutes effectively.

Adrien Rabiot can also play the box-to-box role, scoring 11 goals for Juventus last season, and would add vital competition.

This added depth gives Ten Hag more freedom to rotate, and mix up his options dependent on match-ups.

Caicedo also has the added bonus of being able to play at right-back if required, although this is unlikely to be a full-time solution.

Value

While Moises Caicedo could cost around £80 million, Adrien Rabiot is available on a free transfer with his Juventus contract set to expire.

The cheap deal for Rabiot would effectively offset the big spent on Caicedo, with two deals complete for £80 million, rather than one.

Rabiot’s arrival would also take some of the early pressure off Caicedo, who is still likely to be a solid long-term investment.

Youth and experience

Moves for Caicedo and Rabiot would benefit Manchester United’s squad in two aspects, adding a blend of youth and experience.

Caicedo, 21, and Rabiot, 28, will give United the best of both worlds, immediate impact and a long-term future.
