Former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe is reportedly a target for Ipswich Town and the newly promoted Championship side are ready to make a move.

According to TeamTalk, Kieran Mckenna’s side are ready to enter the race for the Englishman amid competition from Sheffield United.

The 25-year-old centre-half is a free agent after being released by United earlier this summer upon the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

The defender is an academy graduate and the defender had high potential, so much so that Jose Mourinho decided he was ready to start against Alexis Sanchez and Arsenal.

Despite Mourinho giving the defender his break and captaining the club at all levels, Tuanzebe made just 37 first-team appearances in the first team between 2017 and 2021 before he was released.

Unsuccessful loan spells

The Englishman has experienced plenty of loans during his time at the club, ranging from Napoli to Stoke, some were more successful than others. Ultimately, it came as no surprise when he was released at the end of his deal.

The defender had a successful loan spell at Aston Villa when the West Midlands side were in the Championship, but, apart from a few brief appearances for United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, never really cemented himself as a United defender and was always third or fourth choice.

Premier League interest

Sheffield United have been strongly linked with a move for Tuanzebe as Paul Heckingbottom’s side prepare for their return to the Premier League.

The report, however, goes on to say that McKenna is confident that his links with United and the defender himself could lead to Ipswich pulling off the deal of the former United defender.

Despite his high potential, Tuanzebe has seen his progress hampered by a number of injury problems and he made only four appearances during a loan spell at Stoke City during the second half of last season.

Since then, the defender didn’t feature much and is still a free agent.
